Diversity Statement
At New Swan, our productions include people with a variance of backgrounds and experiences, celebrating each individual both on stage and off. We allow our differences to affect our productions, manifesting richer and deeper stories. Theater without diversity is meaningless, and diversity without equity is an empty promise.
New Swan assesses how to be as inclusive and equitable as possible. We provide access to an increasingly diverse group of students, instructors, staff, artists, and community members. Our goal is to extend opportunities and access to people who have previously been excluded or unheard.
We recognize that Shakespeare’s plays are inherently problematic, especially for audiences and Artists of color. Our country’s complicated history of ongoing systemic oppression and injustice has seen white culture adopting the Bard in ways that made his plays inaccessible to people of color, the LGBTQIA+ community, and many others. We are committed to remaining aware of these issues, and to addressing them in our season selection, adaptations, designs, casting, and staging.
